Welcome to the New Academic Year!

Hetzel Union Building at University Park CampusAcademic year 2016-2017 will begin on August 22, and our faculty, staff, and students are ready to go! There is a huge amount of behind-the-scenes work required to support our students, and while we continue to offer courses throughout the summer we also use the summer months to retool for new processes and prepare for evolving student needs. LionPATH is the New Way of Student Life

Across a number of coordinated offices throughout the university much of the past year has been dedicated to implementing LionPATH, the new student information system at Penn State. LionPATH will completely replace eLion. LionPATH offers a much more powerful student information system that will benefit students and faculty/staff alike. The first challenge is helping nearly 100,000 users transition to a new system. We all need to be patient because everyone is working with a new system, students, staff, faculty, system administrators, and tech support alike.

The best information for LDT online students is the Graduate Student Portal of LionPATH. From that portal you may then log into LionPATH’s Student Center.

Throughout the Fall 2016 term, eLion will continue to fade from use. As you’ve experienced already, all Fall 2016 course registration occurred in LionPATH. Course registration, including course adds, drops, and term withdrawals, will continue in perpetuity in LionPATH. [Read more…]

About Our Wednesday to Tuesday Lesson Schedule

The LDT program’s courses are delivered using a Wednesday to Tuesday lesson schedule. This weekly schedule is also used by faculty of the Curriculum and Instruction (CI) courses at Penn State, which is another group that serves a large K-12 educator population. LDT and CI have been deeply thoughtful about our lesson schedule, and we have maintained this schedule throughout pressure to conform to the Monday to Sunday schedule that is used by most of World Campus. Do everything in LionPATH

LionPATH, Penn State’s new student information system, has been phased into daily use since Spring 2016. Students, especially those enrolled in a LDT program degree or certificate, should now be using LionPATH for all of their student information needs, including:

  • Registering for courses
  • Dropping courses before the official start of the course
  • Reviewing grades, transcripts, and schedules
  • Paying bills

Canvas tip: Setting Communication Preferences

Partial screen preview of the Canvas help center article about notification preferencesThe Canvas course management system (CMS) offers useful features for pushing notices about our courses right to you. If this is your first semester using Canvas, then your settings might all be at the default, and you might want to receive better notices of those announcements. You can use this guide to adjust your personal notification settings.

If you have questions or issues with Canvas, your best bet is to contact the World Campus Help Desk, as those specialists are available and well-prepared to help you solve your technical problems. Information about contacting the Help Desk for technical support is here.

World Campus Canvas Course Orientation for Students

The ANGEL course management system is retiring after a long service to Penn State University (and many other universities across the world). The new course management system is named Canvas. Canvas is in operation now for some Penn State World Campus courses, including some LDT courses. Come Fall 2016, virtually all World Campus courses will be delivered via Canvas.

If you’ve not yet taken a course delivered by Canvas, you would benefit from browsing through the World Campus Canvas Course Orientation for students. It will help you prepare for the new structure and layout of courses delivered via Canvas. The new course management system is not overly complicated (in fact, it is much more intuitive than ANGEL), but new things take some time to learn, so give yourself a head start.Splash Image Canvas Orientation

She will use her learning design background to support the development of information literacy in all World Campus students. Summer 2016 Registration Begins

There will be plenty more snow to come this winter season, and yet here we are preparing for summer! Summer 2016 registration opens to everyone—certificate students, degree students, and the general public—on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

All LDT Programs’ students are encouraged to register for courses as soon as they are eligible, and on February 3 all certificate and degree students are eligible. Please remember that payment is not due at time of registration, so it is best to register for the courses you need at the time when they have openings. Registering early also allows the LDT Program to explore additional offerings for courses when courses fill quickly.

We hope that your Spring 2016 semester is progressing well, and we look forward to seeing you in the summer.
