Summer-only Courses
Two courses offered during Summer 2019 are considered “summer-only courses” in our program, and are offered only during the summer term of any academic year. The two summer-only courses are:
- LDT 433 – Teaching and Learning Online in K-12 Settings, and
- LDT 440 – Educational Technology Integration.
One additional course will be offered only once during the 2019-2020 academic year. Students, especially those in the ELEARN certificate, who will need LDT 832 – Design for Course Management Systems prior to the Summer 2020 term should plan to take LDT 832 this summer (Summer 2019).
First-term or Second-term Students
Students who are new to an LDT degree or certificate program are encouraged to take these two courses (in any order) as their first courses in the program:
- LDT 467 – Emerging Web Technologies and Learning, and
- LDT 415A – Systematic Instructional Development.
LDT 467 will be offered in Summer and Fall 2019. LDT 415A will be offered again in Fall 2019. Students who were accepted/admitted for Summer 2019 should start with LDT 467.
Demand-driven Expansion Courses
Three courses offered during Summer 2019 are able to expand to meet student demand prior to 1 July 2019. If the course is full, please add yourself to the official wait list for the course in LionPATH. Once the waitlist shows a demand for the course, a second section will be opened. Certain restrictions apply—contact Dr. Kirby for details. The three expandable courses for Summer 2019 are:
- LDT 440 – Educational Technology Integration,
- LDT 467 – Emerging Web Technologies and Learning, and
- LDT 832 – Design for Course Management Systems.
Upper-Level M.Ed. Students
The LDT Program has traditionally offered the course LDT 835 – Supervised Field Experience in Online Instruction only to students who are completing the Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Online in K-12 Settings. TLOK12 students are required to complete this field experience as the final course in their certificate program.
We are piloting a second version of the LDT 835 course that provided a supervised field experience in developing resources for, and teaching in, higher education (college, university, professional school, etc.). This course is offered in partnership with professional instructional designers working across Penn State University. Students who have been admitted into the M.Ed. in LDT program and who have completed 15 or more LDT credits prior to start of the Summer 2019 term are eligible to participate in the pilot course. If you meet the basic qualifications are are interested in learning more, please contact Dr. Kirby.
